Conversations on Design – Vol. 2

My colleague, Sel, and I like to discuss what’s “in” and what’s “out” in the world of design and culture at large. We’re pretty good at it. Here is one such conversation:

Sel: I’m still working on the details of this, do u think I should ditch the triangles? what do they look like to u?
Me: teepees! they are awesome.
potentially racist, but awesome
Sel: haha ok good. thanks
Me: teepees are IN
Sel: I would definitely agree
I told u ages ago that Native Americans r in
Me: nah
native americans are not in. just their dwellings
arrows. out
Sel: lol
yup
Me: feathers, going out
Sel: :( ah jeez
Me: casinos. out
Sel: lol casinos, never in
Me: they had their day
Sel: ok..
Me: like remember when dice and spades were in
Sel: no i dont
Me: well, you’re better off for not knowing.

Artist Bryan Gill Nash

I’ve recently been admiring the work of artist Bryan Gill Nash. It looks like he does a lot of different sculptures, installations and prints – but I am particularly fond of the relief prints of cross cut sections of trees and other lumber. I came across a video on the Martha Stewart website, a short documentary of sorts, that illustrates his whole process. I love that he is hands-on the entire way, from finding the wood to final print. It makes me want to try the process on a bit of a smaller scale. (the following images are from bryannashgill.com.)

Here’s a screenshot of the video. Watch it right here.

Ikea bookends

I have been looking for some fancy bookends for a while now. Something mid-century and/or cast iron. I finally gave up and bought these from Ikea.

I did a little custom paint job, and here is how it turned out:

Definitely not the cast iron work of art I was originally searching for, but it works, and for a fraction of the cost.
